Why was battle of gallipoli significance to New Zealanders
The war took more than 100,000 New Zealanders overseas, many for the first time. Being so far from home made these New Zealanders very aware of who they were and where they were from. In the battle they were able to compare themselves with men from other nations. Out of this came a sense of separate identity, and many New Zealand soldiers began to refer to themselves as 'Kiwis'. The battle was significance to New Zealanders as they got their separate identitty. The Gallipoli was a relatively minor part of the First World but it has great significance for New Zealand's and it has become an important symbol of its national identity. The battle was important for its national identity. World War 1 was of enormous importance and significance to New Zealanders. Ormond Burton, who served in Gallipoli and France, believed that “somewhere between the landing at Anzac and the end of the battle of the Somme, New Zealand became a nation”.It shows that the war helped New Zealand become a nation. Although Anzac Day, the anniversary of the first day of conflict, does not mark a military triumph, it does remind us of a very important episode in new Zealand’s history. Great suffering was caused to a small country by the loss of so many of its young men. But the Gallipoli campaign showcased attitudes and attributes – bravery, loyalty to king and comrades – that helped New Zealand define itself as a nation, even as it fought unquestioningly on the other side of the world in the name of the British Empire. However the Gallipoli Campaign was an awakening for New Zealand, a moment when a young nation emerged, tragically, onto the world stage as an independent identity separate from its colonial parent. The shared experienced of Australia and New Zealand troops formed a strong foundation for lasting ties between our two countries. Today New Zealand and Australians stand beside each other, with a strong and friendl relationship, and work together to achieve a peaceful, secure and prosperous world. Significant of Battle of Gallipoli was the symbol of how these bonds forged in the horrors of battle and build a better and more peaceful world. The memorials to those young men who gave thei lives in the pursuit of freedom are an obvious part of our history. These memorials gave families and friends of those lost a place to lay flowers and wreaths and to contemplate the ultimate sacrifice these young men had made. People still remember about all the soldiers that fought through memorials and it tells us why the war is still significant.
